What is a UAV?
UAV is an abbreviation for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, which is commonly known as a drone. There are a few other names for a UAV, but what it all comes down to is that a UAV, is an aircraft without a human pilot on board. The functions and flight of a UAV may be controlled by a remote operator, or it may be fully autonomous and have all operations directed by an onboard computer. Either method supports the concept of one other name used in the industry, which is that a UAV is truly an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). It is a system, because it takes more than just some ultra-lightweight composite, a handful of high tech gadgets, and a few propellers to get the job done; it takes knowledge, talent, and expertise.
